Chemical burns

Use of solutions including vinegar, lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid. May cause very minor reactions to skin.
Clean water and first aid kit to be available at all times.
Liquids are not to be ingested or splashed at other people. 
Give clear instructions about the use of solutions.

Staining of clothing.

Use of beetroot and red cabbage liquids may cause staining of fabrics if spilt.
Appropriate materials provided to clear up spilt liquids.
Do not consume these liquids.

Over excited participants

Set out clear instructions at the start of the activity about expected behaviour and clear consequences for not following these instructions. Those unable to follow instructions to observe activity until they are able to participate safely.

Hazard: Household Chemicals


Risk: Accidental ingestion, skin/eye contact, inhalation, spills or inappropriate mixing of household cleaning chemicals.

  • Only normal household-use chemicals to be used on sit. 
  • Chemicals kept in their original, clearly labelled containers. Do not decant into drinks bottles or unlabelled containers.
  • Chemicals stored securely in a locked area inaccessible to young people. A locked vehicle may be used where appropriate, provided storage is safe and suitable for the product.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions and any precautions shown on the product label.
  • Avoid mixing chemicals or using products together unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer.
  • Spills cleaned promptly and the affected area kept clear until safe.
  • Appropriate hand hygiene after use and suitable PPE used where indicated by the product instructions.
  • If exposure occurs, follow the first-aid instructions on the product label and contact ScoutMed if medical assistance is required.
  • The chemical container/bottle should accompany the casualty to ScoutMed where practicable, so the medical team can identify the substance and relevant safety information.
  • Serious exposure, breathing difficulties, significant eye exposure, reduced consciousness or other medical emergency should be escalated immediately through the event emergency arrangements/999 as appropriate.
