Boarding and leaving boats
Young People,Leaders,Trent Lock SAC staff
Group Leaders or instructors to expain the correct lauch/recovery of craft, using team work to minimise danage to craft/injury to users
Group leaders to advise on the dangers and instruct on correct methods of embarkation and stowing kit on bank
Group leaders advise on dangers of slipping. This would include the need to avoid horseplay All users must wear good non slip footwear 



Drowning 
Users
Prior to the session group leaders or instructors will stress the need for safety.
All users must wear a buoyancy aid and users must be able to swim 50 metres in open water. Trainees taught to hold onto boat for buoyancy should they capsize. 
Close watch from supervisor that everyone is OK  
All group leaders/ instructors are first aid trained.  A designated safety boat is on the water at all times
Buoyancy aids inspected on issue & removed from service if damaged. 
At the pre-activity briefing all users are asked whether they can swim 50 metres. Non-Swimmers are not allowed to take part without extra precautions being in place. 
First Aid training records are held on file & staff are encouraged to re-train every three years. 
The safety boat is tested for water worthiness on a regular basis


Entrapment
Users
*Pre-launch briefing on avoidance of raft overturning Close watch from supervisor that everyone is OK
*Duty instructors are trained in rescue techniques and first aid   
*Ongoing staff training is provided in safety techniques  
*First Aid training records are held on file & staff are encouraged to re-train every three years  


Hypothermia/ Hyperthermia 
Young People,Leaders,Trent Lock SAC staff
Group leaders trained to be aware of symptoms & if identified take immediate appropriate action. 
The weather conditions would be assessed during instruction.
Should the weather become adverse the session would be halted.
The group leader or instructor would assess the weather/water conditions ensuring that they were acceptable for the group on the water and that the group is clothed appropriately.
Safety boat crew should be made aware during training for the need for sun protection

Clothing checked for suitability before going on the water.
First Aid training records are held on file & staff are encouraged to re-train every three years. 
Regular training updates should reemphasise hazards

Medical Conditions

Safety boat crew should be made aware during training of the need to inform the warden of any disabling medical condition which makes it unsafe to carry out their duty of care. 

Persons diagnosed with epilepsy are not permitted to drive the safety boat.
All group leaders/ instructors are first aid trained.  

Regular training updates should reemphasise hazards of person on the water with undeclared medical conditions.

Weil's disease / Leptospirosis
Everyone
In house training provided to staff on risks.
clean any wounds as soon as possible
cover any cuts and grazes with waterproof plasters
Where dead rodent require retrieval technical tools eg) litter picker to be used.
Washing facilities eg) waterless soap,hand sanitizer to be provided
Hands to be washed prior to eating. DO not eat, drink or smoke before hands clean
shower as soon as possible if you've been in potentially infected water
do not drink water from places like rivers, canals or lakes
